IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center is a leading research, development, and innovation centre active in the fields of High-Performance Computing (HPC), Quantum Computing (QC), Data Analytics (HPDA), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and their applications, with strong international links employing more than 150 scientific, technical, and administrative employees. At present, IT4Innovations is running two supercomputers, namely Karolina (15.7 PFlop/s) and Barbora (849 TFlop/s), and is a member of the LUMI consortium operating the largest EU LUMI supercomputer. At the beginning of this year, the Quantum Computing Lab was established at IT4Innovations. A tender is currently underway to acquire one of the new European quantum computers (EuroHPC JU), which will be located at IT4Innovations.

We seek a

Head of the Quantum Computing research Lab

 

Activity description:

  • Research Lab management, responsibility for its activities and development,
  • direct management of teams of researchers working on given research tasks within the Lab,
  • setting the annual plan of R&D activities by the Lab's scientific focus, ongoing projects, and the IT4Innovations Strategic Plan Implementation Scheme and responsibility for its implementation,
  • defining individual research teams and their activities and determining new directions for the Lab's research and development, including ensuring coordination and continuity with the activities of other labs,
  • active search for grant opportunities to support the Lab's research activities (e.g., contract research, research and development projects), 
  • responsibility for the financial security and sustainability of the Lab,
  • presenting the results of the Lab's R&D activities to the professional and general public,
  • ensuring adequate staffing of the Lab and the professional growth of the Lab's employees.

                              

Full-time equivalent: 0.5–1.0

Type of work contract: Fixed-term work contract

Expected start of employment: 1 January 2025 or as agreed

 

We require:

  • University degree - researcher or academic with several years of experience in the field of the Lab's focus (development of new algorithms for quantum computers and simulators including their practical applications, quantum error correction, research in the field of quantum technologies, etc.),
  • experience with HPC is an advantage,
  • a leading scientist who has made a significant contribution to the development of the field internationally,
  • experience in solving and coordinating longer-term research tasks (R&D and contract research projects),
  • minimum academic degree of PhD (or equivalent), preferably an associate professor, professor, or equivalent position abroad,
  • regular publication of scientific papers in prestigious peer-reviewed journals,
  • invited contributions at national and international scientific conferences,
  • a member of scientific and editorial boards, scientific committees of conferences, and professional international societies,
  • minimum of 5 years of experience in leading research teams,
  • excellent managerial and organisational skills and competencies,
  • experience in the administration of research projects,
  • excellent knowledge of English (written and verbal), knowledge of another language is an advantage,
  • Business and analytical reasoning,    
  • Flexibility and creative approach to solving problems,
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
